About the Recreational Miners Website

Welcome to the Recreational Miners Website! My name is Steve Herschbach and I created this website in January of 2005. I am a life-long Alaskan and have been involved in various mining related activities for over 35 years. I got my start when gold was $35 an ounce, and you can rest assured it was not some thought of making money at mining that got me started. It was simply the idea of going out and finding some gold, and when I found my first little specks of gold I was hooked for life. For me, it was the fun, the adventure, the connection with mining history, and the thrill of the hunt itself that got me started on my quest for gold. That same thrill for me extends to other minerals with potential value, like platinum, diamonds or even meteorites.

I've since gone on to become involved in mining as a business, both as a professional prospector and miner, and as a retailer of mining equipment. But to this day I also enjoy just going out for a day and prospecting for the sheer fun of it. I started as a recreational miner and still enjoy taking a day off from the real work of owning an actual mine and spending a day as a recreational miner. I'm like a commercial fisherman who still likes to go sport fishing now and then.

Since I've been involved in mining and prospecting most of my life I have learned a great deal on the subject. When I started the information available was very limited. There was no internet and so I taught myself most of what I know by trial and error. The internet has been a real boon to beginners in making information on diverse subjects more readily available. I enjoy working with websites, and so have created this website to help people who are like I was 35 years ago. Just starting out, raring to go, and just needing a little information to get me started...
